About the Lobethal Living Nativity show
The Living Nativity is now sponsored by all of the Christian Churches in the area, and 400 – 500 from all walks of life take part. It is a traditional re-enactment of the events of the first Christmas, complete with a real baby “Jesus”, Mary, Joseph, Shepherds, Angels, Wise men, and a large menagerie of animals featuring camels, donkeys, goats, lambs, calves, tame doves, a baby alpaca and a dog, all set in a straw strewn stable producing the appropriate sights, sounds and smells. The Biblical text and carols accompany the 15 minutes “show”, which is performed at 8.50 and 9.20 each evening, beginning on the second Sunday of December, and running until, and including, December 23rd.
Authenticity is a major factor in the costumes also, and no expense has been spared over the years. All materials and decorations have been carefully chosen, designed, lovingly sewn and financed by local Christians. Extra costumes for tiny angels or extra tall wise men are added as needed!!
Actors are encouraged to dress appropriately, no glasses, jewellery [including wedding rings and earrings], hair accessories or modern footwear is worn.
Months of careful planning by the committee, made up from members of different denominations, goes into the production. Nomination forms are sent out in September each year, with preference given, where possible, to newcomers. Rosters are then compiled and sent to each participant early in December. Participants include the choir, supper ladies, costume dressers, director, light and sound technicians, stable hands, bus and people parking attendants as well as the all important cast. Participants are rostered as often or as little as they wish.
The actors live Jesus’ birth from their own character’s perspective, and viewers say “I feel like I was there when Jesus was born”. This is the Gospel in its simplest form and we feel that God has helped us to overcome many hiccups and problems over the years. |
