THE SOLAR GROVE & THE LOBETHAL LANTERNS
A new lighting installation created especially for the Lights of Lobethal festival, using renewable energy and hand crafted lanterns!
Each unique and colourful Lantern is hand made using transclucent fabric, and is a unique design created especially for Lobethal by artist Cindi Drennan. The aim was to create a new unique feature of Lobethal that would build on the traditional textiles heritage of the community and be a new feature that looks as great during the day as during the night.
The Lobethal Lanterns collectively grouped together form the Solar Grove. Wherever you see them, you know that the energy being used is renewably generated from Solar Panels, Wind Power, or Green Power.
How were they made?
The lanterns you see in Lobethal were made in community workshops, and will continue to be made as an ongoing feature of the Lights of Lobethal. If you would like to be involved in making lanterns or participating in future workshops, please visit our workshops page.
The solar grove is illuminated by high powered LED garden stem lights designed and manufactured in Australia by ME Lighting. These are incorporated into beautiful illuminated light sculptures, created by Cindi Drennan working with residents of Lobethal in workshops leading up to the festival.
Much of the grove of lights is powered from energy generated by Solar panels during the day, stored in batteries that power the lights at night time. The rechargeable deep cell Batteries have been supplied to the project by CenturyYuasa Batteries (who will also dispose of our spent batteries through their recycling program). We have also been provided technical advice from Solaris and Battery World Mt Barker.
Where are the Solar Groves?
In 2009 The LED lights are located at two sites along the Main Street of Lobethal and in a site at the Adelaide Hills Market.
